Ok stupid question of the day. How do you put a bow string on a recurve bow?

A good bowstringer is the best and safest way. Get one and follow the directions or get someone that knows the deal to show you. Otherwise I'm hesitant to advise here because I've seen a bow get messed up doing it wrong. Without a stringer I use the step thru method but it is not for the novice without seeing it done properly. I will say if a limbtip touches the floor, something isn't right and if at let off, the string isn't with the string in the grooves or centered along the limbs, again something is improper. Back off. It's easy to put a limbtip on the floor and not realise it until you're at the point of no return. Bad. Get a stringer. There is an ebay store called Rhude archery. The guy that runs it can be contacted and he can help you make a good choice for a reasonable price. Tom Morava is also an expert that'll probably have the lowest price anyplace. Buck Fever has Morava's current contact info. They don't cost much.

With reasonable care, the step-through method works just fine on recurves. I've never owned a stringer...

I've got a 40 year old Kodiak that I stepped thru to string on a 10 degree day back in the 70's.Either it was extra rigid from the cold,or my "form" ain't that good, but it came apart.Twisted and delaminated.Nice.Esp. after a 100+ mile predawn drive. That said, plenty of folks have been using the step thru method for decades w/o any problems.
Heck,I once put new cables and a string on a compound without a press.Well,me and 3 friends. ;D
Amazing what foolish youth, ignorance, and beer will let you do.

;D
I cheered as a couple of my friends tried to do the same. It was a heck of a fight and in the end, the bow won. ;D
