We went down to a spot where we ussually pick up our black walnuts and found someone had already beat us to them GRRR , someone found our stash lol. we picked up the few that were left that they missed but for the most part they were gone. no worries , I figured I would just keep an eye out for some. we are going out today to get our walnuts . I found a new spot that has plenty and nobody will know about them , so we wont have to compete to get them They are a pain in the rear to pick but they taste so good mixed with english walnuts in fudge and the like ;D. we ussually only have to go every few years to collect them , they last a while. anyone ever collect and use the bounties that ma nature gives for free .. we also pick berries in the summer on occasion, nothing better than 1 for me 1 for the bucket ;D

Not the biggest haul but it will do. It was funny how the youngins were hating the thought ... until we got out and I started showing them a few things beside the walnut pickin . On the way leaving the first spot it was "where are we going next ? " . we watched a farmer cultivate some beans on the wma and found some wild grapes and some sunflowers that the girls tried . all in all a great day outdoors .

I'll crack most of them and put them in a bucket. Barb will pick most of them though , we hope to get 5 lbs maybe. they should last a few years mixed in with the store nuts . Barb likes picking them or says she does . we scrounged around the field to see what the cultivater left .... lots of good corn laying around. I picked up a few ears but mostly just exposed them with my boot so they were visible. they are starting to cut the beans , them suckers are a pain to walk through .

I do like black walnuts and they sure require lots of work to crack and pick. They are great for catching fish. When I was a kid, we would gather green ones during the summer and put them in a burlap bag and then drive over the bag with the car or tractor until the bag was saturated with the juice. Pitch the bag into a small body of water and all of the fish will come to the top. All frogs, snakes and turtles will leave the water. Don’t get the juice on your skin as it will burn like fire and stain skin, clothing or anything else it gets on. It will kill the fish and is illegal to use on public waters.

Cleaning walnuts:
My hunting partner has a small commercial orchard, including several English & black walnut trees. Several years ago, we came up with this idea for cleaning the husks.
He went to an appliance dealer and bought an old clothes drier for about $25. We took the heat element out and removed the filter. I wired up a 240V outside outlet. Since it only needs to run the motor & not the heater, a 15A circuit works fine. I substituted a 12g cord for the original pigtail so it's easier to use.
Dump in about 1/4 bushel of nuts and let it rip. Assuming the nuts are completely dry, it'll take about 1/2 hour to remove all the husks & blow them out the back. It leaves the shells nice and bright. Note: this is NOT a quiet operation.
Now all we need to come up with is a way to crack them that doesn't pulverize the meats.
