All I can say is that it's about damn time!
I had a neat hunt yesterday afternoon. I thought about skipping the hunt altogether because it was near 70 degrees and gusting to 15 mph. I haven't been able to hunt much this year so I thought I better get my butt in a stand. Got on stand at 2:30 and around 3:30 I heard what I thought was a deer blowing in the distance. It was up wind of me so I didn't know what was going on. I stood up slowly and turned around to see three deer running through the woods on the other side of a cut bean field 250 yards away. The last deer in line was very large bodied, but it happened so fast I couldn't get a good look. Next thing I know they reverse course and I see that the largest deer is a buck and he's snort wheezing to beat the band. I assume he was trying to get a doe to stand still. I lost track of the does, but the buck stopped and stood in the same spot for a long time and eventually bedded. I got my video camera out and got some video of him. He had a pretty tall rack and beyond his ears a good bit, but I couldn't count tines. I messed with him a little by rattling and grunting. He would stand and look my direction, but he wouldn't come my way, then he would bed again. I think a doe was bedded nearby and he wouldn't leave her. He stayed bedded until it was too dark to make him out. I know this stuff is common place in the deer woods this time of year, but I never tire of seeing it or reading about it. Makes me thank my lucky stars I'm able to hunt!
At last light I had two does come by me at a fast trot. It happened so fast that by the time I got them stopped the bigger of the two was by me with no shot, but the smaller of the two stopped perfectly and it got an arrow dropping it in it's tracks. I had to finish it with another arrow. When I got down 20 minutes later I found that I'd just taken out a button buck. I just couldn't see the buttons at last light. I know I should feel bad for taking out a future buck, but he's eating good right about now.
