I heard from NCBowman right before Thanksgiving, but nothing since. Bowman - did you make it back from Ohio?

I think that Freedomrules said that boman was going to stay a week or so longer in Ohio.

I'll bet he's on a good buck. He's been known to seemingly vanish when that happens.

He does this every year I wouldnt get even slightly worried until the second week of December. Bowmans always seemed to be big on hunting the late and post rut for big bucks.

Welcome back Bowman! After you sleep, let us know how things went out there after us lightweights flew the coop.

nothing from Ohio but lessons, good memories, and a few hundred pics.
We just got their too late and could not overcome it. I was on a good one but to pursue his tracks was likely to get him killed or wounded by a gunhunter if I rousted him. Plenty of yotes moved in for all the wounded this week. That left me hit or miss spot hunting on trails I knew he had traveled before. All the deer went nocturnal opening day of gun season and the only ones moving were rousted by the mobs of drivers and probers.
Catch 22 and I hope the deer wins to see me again. He beat me this time.

Welcome back my friend, Today you will get hit with the hunting blues lol, i did. you should get over it in like ....never.. lmao. seeing a deer or two of that caliber is tough to leave behind . i don't see any reason in the world why that buck and the one i saw shouldnt be there next year imo. if nobody got them on the first morning of gun season i doubt they will be easy to take. one thing i know for sure, if they do get taken most likely we will see pics of them somewhere on the web. they were just that kind of deer . one thing i will always have is the video that runs through my head of that big buck in Ohio walking down the hill. next year we need to look at the full moon and avoid it at all costs . catch up on some rest and welcome back

Yeah, were were on the back side of it. That's OK. There's always next year. Did you ever go check out that big rub at the end of the overgrown field on the point above that deep creek bottom? (the one I posted a pic of in: "That ain't a rub...")

Did you ever go check out that big rub at the end of the overgrown field on the point above that deep creek bottom? (the one I posted a pic of in: "That ain't a rub...") I think I did and also have pics of the buck that likely made it. In retrospective opinion of what I saw and learned, I think we were dealing with 3 shooter bucks and another 2 that were close on that side. There were big bucks seen during the summer that had local gun hunters flocked to a certain ridgeline every day of gun season I observed. We didn't even check that ridge out ( I did after you guys left) so there could be a good buck around that we didn't know of. The local gun hunters are a real threat to any big buck there. Organized drives by those with years of experience in the area makes a good buck lucky to survive. I found out the 10pt I passed on last year was killed opening day by a gun hunter last fall. He killed a 7pt in the same spot Monday. He has hunted the same spot every opener for like 14yrs and always gets his buck there. It's the same eastside spot in the woods off Lovers Lane that Twanger hunted. I know because I rode around late opening morning and caught him and his buddy dragging it out. Didn't get a pic because traffic was piling behind me but it was a small basket rack. He killed one 24" inside there some years ago but he shoots the first buck to show. The spot and way he hunts every year. At any rate, I have several giant plates of stuff to do in front of me. That and some pic cropping and enhancing I need to learn may keep me slow posting for a bit but I'll get to it in time. I have a lot of pics. A couple of em are worth a closer look.

Sounds good. I'd love to see some of the pics you took. Danged shame he killed that little 7 pointer. It's probably the one I passed the first day I hunted that spot. I say passed. I could have taken a 35yd shot at him - right on my edge of ability. Anyway, it's a good spot to ambush a trolling buck, and I might try to hunt it a couple of times next year. It didn't show alot of buck sign, but the bucks used it. That's what drives me nuts about trying to ambush a big buck. It's so hard to tell what trails are good and what trails are not until you invest alot of time.

It interesting listening to you boys. It sounds like we're doing much the same thing here this year. Hitting some good public land, assessing the trophy potential, figuring out how they run through and figuring how to work around the pressure. It does make you feel optimistic about the prospects for next year.
