Hi everyone, my name is Tim Wilcox. I am from NY State (near Buffalo & Rochester). I love the outdoors & everything to do with it. I love to Trap, hunt & go fishing with my family. I look forward to reading the forum & being a part of it. Jim told me about the site, looks like a good 1 too.

Well here's a short story. Here in NY State it is shotgun only. Were allowed to use pistols & black powder as well. Season opened here on Nov 19th & I seen many flat heads on opening day. I did take a doe near dark. The day before Thanksgiving I had already started using my inline muzzleloader instead of my shotgun. I had not walked 30 yards from my truck when I seen a buck that had just stood up. He was only 35 yards from me. I pulled up & made a great shot that dropped him flat in his tracks. I stood there & started reloading the gun, the entire time this buck is flat out. I reload the gun & start walking to the deer & he jumps up & takes off. Only goes 10 yards & drops again & can not get a clean shot. Gets up again & only goes 20 yards & drops. Runs into a thicket & jumps other deer to the point there is now several fresh tracks. I forgot to mention that the ONLY blood was where I dropped him. I track every fresh track I found & never seen him again. I have no idea why this deer even got up, I made 1 heck of a shot & flattened him. Since this time, I have taken another doe & hope to find this buck. I have until Dec 11th for reg season & then until Dec 20th for muzzleloader. So I hope in that time I'll score on this same buck or another 1.

Bummer on the buck Tim. Sounds like you hit him forward of the shoulder. A little over a month ago I rolled a nice buck with an arrow to the shoulder, and then he jumped up and ran off. Never found him. Looked for hours. I'd almost rather gut shoot them them hit too far forward.

I'd almost rather gut shoot them them hit too far forward. I'd rather miss than even gut shoot them. I have looked & looked even with snow. This makes me sick when you loose a nice buck. Have had it happen before too. Everytime I'm on this property, I'm always hoping I'll find him.

Even years later, whenever I'm in an area where I've lost one, I catch myself looking for a drop of blood. ;D Deer hit high sometimes get up and recover. You may get him yet.
