I need some ideas to come up with for a deer drag. I was thinking about taking a cumber long and replacing the cable with some kind of nylon rope. Or just bringing some nylon rope to add to it. I can always make up a sling. I need it to be really light weight and small that I can fit into my backpack.
But I was thinking I could hook the cumber long up to a tree drag the deer maybe 75 yds, then start over again. This is mainly if I am alone, which it looks like I am going to be alone most of the time this year.
What do ya'll think? Any ideas???
Thanks!

I built a deer cart using a hand truck and 2 16" wheelbarrow wheels. I hunted with a buddy of mine who had a regular deer cart. We used his first and after we used mine, we rarely used his again. You can put this together for around $50 at Home Depot.

You might be surprised how easy it is to move a deer by putting it on a regular 8X10 tarp and then sliding that along. Last one I killed, we put the deer on a tarp and my 16yr old boy pulled it 300yds with ease. He had me out of breath and I was just following along.

Hah! He only looks like he's 74 years old.... only kidding....
Here's what I do... works well on deer to about 100lb.
I take the front legs and cross them over the back of the deer's head and then using a 1/4" 8-foot nylon line I tie the head & legs together. Using my brush saw I cut a 5-inch handle from some handy 1" sapling or dead-fall. Then I clove-hitch the rope around my handle about 3-feet in front of the deer. I then tie the other end of the line to my pack or tree-stand so I can haul the deer without twisting around sideways.
If the deer gets hung-up in a blow-down (or before!) I grab the handle I tied into the line and haul it's shoulders over the blow-down and then start walking again.
I've pulled a 185lb buck out of the woods like this, but I only had to drag him 200 yds. I've drug 100lb does over a mile of rough terrain using this technique.

I forgot to tell ya'll I have a seriously bad back. Bad enough that it has taken me out of work and out of the woods the last 2 years. It causes me to walk with a limp and just walking without pulling or draging anything causes alot of pain. That's why I was thinking about the cumber long type of idea.

A comealong is going to be very slow going. I once ratcheted a deer up a steep gorge in northern Arkansas and it turned into quite a job. My last alternative if it's too tuff for me is to reach down for that 50 dollar bill and hire a couple of Mexicans or young guys to get it out. I have a Cabelas SuperMag Cart and it's a lifesaver.

"I forgot to tell ya'll I have a seriously bad back." You need a game cart with 20" wheels like the one that nc recommended. The sportsmans guide has one as well for a little less. www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=206354

Deerhunter instead of a comealong why dont you try some sort of a pully system. I my self tie a rope around the neck and long enough to go around my shoulders to pull. Just my 2 cents

Thanks guys. I think I am gonna check out one of them carts. I have a hand truck sitting in the shed and I got to thinking about putting 4 wheels on it and a small electric motor and a remote control. Problem sloved! ;D
