Every year now I try to take the kids with me scouting at least one time. I started this with my son 6-7 years ago and recently my daughter has joined us. This is the second year on this property so I already had one good setup from last year and recently setup the Willow stand, so I had 2 good ones. But I need a few more because hunting pressure could change my plans. So I took the kids with and we found three main runs where multiple trails converge. I picked the tree at the first spot, I had actually already sort of picked it out, from previous scouting. Then on the second run we picked it together but afterwoods they shared with me how they didn't like it so much because of the lack of cover. Then on the third location I had them pick the tree. My son picked one and then my daughter picked one. As it turned out the Oak my son picked while a good tree was too crooked at the height I would setup at for a stand. So I went to the one my daughter picked and it was doable. I then assessed the cover from the vantage of the deer and it was absolutely awesome. 30 yards away on any of the three trails that come through, it's so thick you can hardly see the Oak. It's a great setup and we called that one Katie's stand since my daughter picked it. Then we named the 4 principle stands that I'll hunt:
1: The Willow stand
2: The 3 Forks stand
3. The Island Thicket stand
4. Katie's stand
I don't know how many hunts I'll get in, it depends on my work schedule and I'm real busy at work, maybe 10-12. But everytime I get out there, when I come home, my kids will ask, what stand did you hunt?
What ever else I say, I promise you this, this is it for me. This is the most important thing to me in my hunting. This is why I got back to it. They are going remember these things. And they're going to remember, that their daddy, was a hunter.
