to locate the bruiser bucks in your areas.
I've been working about 40 miles from home for several weeks and on the drive back late afternoons I usually see several herds of deer each day.
One field in particular, about a hundred acres, I pay close attention to as there are usually at least 40 deer out there and on some days as high as 120 divided into 2 or 3 herds. I've noticed I only see the 100+ number in this field occasionally but sometimes several days in a row.
On the days with high numbers in the field, nearly every time, the big boys will be out there too. Three of them, bulls compared to the other deer, and always hanging together. Other bucks were in the field, no doubt, including at least one still carrying headgear, but the big ones clearly standing out because of their body size and build.
Wed happened to be one of the high numbers days so after I passed that field I rode a little out of my way to check another spot where I have permission. Sure enough, about 50 deer in the field and one of them was the bull. He had two other good size deer with him but once again the body size and build clearly seperated him from the rest.
The reason now is the time to see these deer is the crop fields haven't been turned yet and the deer are concentrating more now than they will later. The warm weather and sun hitting the ground has wild onions and lots of little greenery growing in the unworked fields. The large numbers of deer out in the fields give the big ones enough confidence to step out in daylight also. Even so, they don't get far from the woods unlike many of the others.
Soon the fields will all be disced and the deer will go to the cutdowns for the fresh buds and briar shoots. Then they will breakup from herding and seperate to smaller feedin areas to fawn. It may be June or July before the biggest bucks surface again so if you like to see em, now's the time.
Again, you're best if you can keep a daily watch on your favorite areas as the big ones don't show every day, but on those high number days, the big ones are usually out too.
