ok, so what 10 days of 06 will be within the timeframe for the bull of the woods to be daylight active and prowling in southern Ohio? got my deer & deer huntin calendar right here in front of me. Full moon Sunday, Nov 5. not foolin around this year as the competition stiffened up and is closing in. Scouting is pretty much done on a couple of whoppers and some decent trees are at the ready. Timing seems to be the most questionable issue....

Yep. Saturday the 4th or Sunday the 5th are probably the days to start. That way we'll have about 70% full to 50% full (waning) when things really get hot, after we've done our scouting, and have started getting close to Mr. Big. Ideally it would be about 70% full and waning when we get there, but that would put us there too late relative to the rut. That's OK. Still much better than last time. Yeah, I've got a few trees already picked out. Last minute scouting & weather will help decide where to sit first.

first off what is this thread doing in the public eye lol . lets see last year full moon was on the 15th and i saw the big boy on the 17th. i agree with Walt that maybe the best time to start is right after the full moon. maybe the 5th arrive and go from there. or maybe go the same days as last year , we were so far off it could just be the time to be there this year

I've made some observations the last two years here in Ohio. It seems the most rut activity happens 2-3 days before the full moon in November then it starts to slack off. I believe these are the peak days for my area. (North East Ohio) In 2004 the full moon was on the 26th. I saw the most activity between the 23rd to the 26th. In 2005 the full moon was on the 16th and the most activity observed was the 13th thru the 16th. But this year 2006 the full moon is on the 5th, 1-2 weeks earlier than the previous two years. I've also noticed with a full moon and a clear starry night.....you'll be hard pressed to see any deer the next day during daylight hours unless their jumped up. Rut or not these Ohio deer are pretty dang smart. They feed and move around more at night to stay warm then rest in the sunshine of the day. I think the best 10 days this year will be from October 30th thru November 8th. It seems alot hunters have very good luck the first two weeks in November but if you notice the full moon dates on past and future lunar phases their a week apart every year. 2007 will be on the 24th, 2008 will be on the 13th. This year will be one of the odd years that puts the full moon close to the beginning of November instead of in the middle or towards the end of the month. Will the first 2 weeks in November be as good as the past two years? I don't know but I will be paying close attention the last week of October and the first week of November to see if my theory holds true this year.

tailnbone - thanks for your input on this - definately food for thought. We finished up on the full-moon last time, and it wasn't good for seeing deer movement. A full moon always seems to be a no-go for me in terms of seeing deer moving at dawn and dusk.

You guys ever look at the moon when you get a chubby??? I din't think so and I doubt the deer do either its just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. The moon doesn't dictate a bucks desire to breed. I f the doe is ready it could be September or January, now if your trying to hub it all up in one week that your chances are best for action ( not neccasaraly the best chance to kill), it would always be the second/third week of Nov,between the 7 and 21st because that is the cycle and the very best time frame to insure the largest % of fawns will be born in the spring to allow the highest rate of survival. Most whitetailed deer fawns are born in a relatively short time frame as part of a phenomenon called, "swamping." By birthing most of their fawns in a narrow time window, whitetailed deer ensure their overall survival by "swamping" the woods with more fawns than predators could possibly consume. NOt as prevelant here in Md but Predators will eliminate some deer, of course, but the overwhelming majority will survive until they are able to fend for themselves.
When deer herds are out of balance, the rut and fawning periods last longer than they do in more well-balanced herd. If there aren't enough bucks to breed all the does during their first estrous cycle, the does cycle again . This isn't as crutial in the sothern states as it is in the northern where the winters can be brutal. Late born fawns usually won't make it thru a bad winter up there but we can get away with it because of our mild winters. But soon as the coyotes get more established in Md, late fawns will get hit hard.
Id like to believe the moon and the tide and everything else has a bearing on things but the fact of the matter is Survival rules the rut.
When they come by your stand you better be in it.
Just my opinion

I think you guys would do better on the days preceeding the full moon. I know Kentucky is not Ohio, but it seems as the moon darkens following the full moon hunting slows a bit. In 2005 my clients killed 18 deer between November 2nd and November 16th. As the moon darkened hunting fell off big time. Went from seeing 8-10 deer per hunter to a couple if any. Only 1 deer was killed between 11/17 and 11/23.
