Here in Lake County IL, we have an amazing Whitetail population, with great genetics, but with limited access. Well I just came accross an online mapping tool put out by the Assessors office which lets you point and click and discover who owns what. Last night I located 2 public properties one of which I was watching 3 Monster bucks last September, come out of and feed in the field owned by a church. While I have access to that property part of the way via Forest Preserve, in order to access it without detection I would have to tresspass a short way on private property owned by a corporation, otherwise I'd need to walk on the highway easement, for about a block.
On the other property I already take my kids fishing there, I do walk on the railroad easement for convenience, although there is a public property easement I could take in. That one I have no reservation hunting as I can get in there absolutely undetected.
It's not like I need to find properties as the public land opportunity up here is insanely good and doesn't cost much to secure a parcel. But there is something about thinking outside the box and discovring these properties that appeals to me and of course that these properties have sero human presence does seem to have a positive effect on the deer quality.
dependng on what I draw I don't know that I'll hunt these, but it's nice to have something for the gun seasons, as the other counties are closed over here.
Any of you into this sort of thing?
