Oh well I was meat huntin it just happened to be a button. kinda funny story though. I leave work about 3:30 run down the road to a public spot I hunt regular, I get there about 4 pm. On the way in I see 2 guys I recognize from Pa from years past. We talk maybe 15 or 20 minutes, they tell me they haven't seen a thing all day. I say well I gotta go sit if i wanna see something so I take off down the road a bit. I go in not too far and get a seat by a blowdown, nice leaning tree lol. by now its maybe 4:30 or just past that. I grunt a few times and light a smoke lol. I have intentions on shooting the first deer I see anyway no matter what . about 4:50 i see movement in the thicket I'm hanging by. I grab the rifle and can't hear the deer in the pines but knew right where it would go to , I've hunted and killed a few here before. I was right and it came right where I figured it would. 35 yard shot through some brush which I was kinda worried about . smackdown public land shoulder shot of coarse and the deer drops without even knowing what hit it. turned out to be a button which after the shot I kinda figured it was . midsize body walking alone sorta told the story but meat huntin is meat huntin . by the way I had a ciggy lit and put it down and finished it after the shot I kinda felt bad for the fella's that I was talking to, I know they heard the shot and probably just shook their heads . sometimes thats how it works though ;D

I feel your pain. I very carefully picked what I thought would have been the doe from among three deer (Saturday night) and let the arrow rip. It turned out the be a button buck. Dang.

I did the same thing on the 4th deer this season. I was sure it was a doe. At least I passed on one button this year.

I did the same this year on my first of the year. You would think after 5 years with a bow in my hand I could tell the difference. To tell you the truth I was caught up in the moment and was really only concerned with getting some venison to hit the ground. I just wanted to get the first one for the year under my belt. From that time forward though I have checked and double checked all deer that I have tripped the trigger on. I wouldn't get to down about it, they all taste good!

I've come to the conclusion that MD will never be a state that has a quality deer herd due to the regulations hunters attitudes etc . I let a few decent bucks walk this year only to see them being dragged out of the woods by NR and city slickers I plum give up on it around here. sure there will be that good buck now and again but hunters attitudes will never change. if Md is hellbent on screwing the herd up than I'm now gonna oblige . I'll go elsewhere for my quality hunting.

Congrats Rick...your right meat is meat...and when hunting in thicket it is hard to tell a button from a bald headed doe, unless the buttons are visible.
You should have some good eating there!!

i was just razzing you rick! i totally agree on the non-resident thing, its pretty sad when you go to your favorite piece of public hunting ground, only to find the parking lot full of out of state tags. the dnr really needs to limit the NR licenses or have resident only properties.

Congrates on the dear, shit happens. My son was on castle hill property Sat evening bordering the state , said he herd a guy shoot 3 times then let out a loud WHAHOOOOOOOOOOOOO. That wasn't you was it? LOL Just wondering if someone shot a whopper Sat evening or just excited. I keep telling ya we don't need the state to impliment QDM we have a tremendous amount of mature bucks in MD, stay the course as an individual praticeing your own QDM. It will pay off in the long run. I got so many pics of good bucks this year off the state land its incredible Here's just one

Aro I know you were , I couldn't tell what it was anyway. after being in Ohio for 2 weeks , I see what a real Dept Of Wildlife can do . Ohio knows their stuff beside the fact that most Ohio hunters let the 2 1/2 year olds walk. I'm still sticking with 1 buck a year as the best system ;D I hunted there first morning because when I tried to get near stockton it was crammed with about 40 trucks before light lol. I deemed it unsafe to hunt knowing full well nearly everyone there had no idea where anyone was or the land itself. A guy driving a white truck with a company name on it A-1 printing or something like that shot a 4 point (at chr) , the first buck he saw . I didn't hunt there sat evening so it wasn't me . I'll still have a hard time shooting a just above average buck though I already know that lol . I guess in the long run shooting a bb is better than shooting a 2 1/2 year old with some potential. I just have an attitude since I have to deal with all the aholes hunting public land. just like this evening, slipped into chr and got setup real quick. 2000 acres for the 4 wheelers and they still gotta run past the signs to the no atv side , kinda makes ya feel like puttin some screws in a board for some reason or other ;D. I would love to have a piece of land archery only around here. gets depressing passing deer just to have someone shoot it. those pics do give me some hope though, now if only I had the exact gps reading on them ;D whats that on the ground in the second picture I thought those big hogs don't go to bait ;D

rick, keep you ears open for any land that might become availalble for lease. i am sure we could get 5 or 6 guys to go in, bow only and QDM.

I feel your pain, trust me. Its worst having private land bordering state. At least as a state hunter you know what your dealing with and it don't cost you a dime. We pay a premium and hope the bucks we pass make it thru the mirage of hunters not only the state guys but club members. But fortunantly enough of them do each year and grow to rewarding size, as the pictures show.
As far as GPS coordinants go , your already close, I know about where you hunt and they arn't but a trot away.
Corn!!!!!!!!Is what you see...I never said they didn't come to corn , I said its always at night, and I rarely hnt over corn and have never shot a buck off of it. But its a great tool to use with a trail camera to know your areas potential.
