Hey: 20 guages will work fine. If it's possible to shoot 3" shells, no problem. Any led or copper plated shot will work fine. I had a small lady with me last year who took a 25 pound tom at 30 yards with a 20 gauge and it barely flopped.

Ive killed several with my twenty and its taken its fair share this year in kids hands. Hawks son took his first with it last week and my son took his first two days later with it.
I stick with fives in the twenty for the energy gain. Mine shoots kill patterns to 40 like you wouldnt believe but I still call it a 30 yard gun . Twenties polished and choked down are notorious for super tight patterns so finely adjustable sights are pretty much a must have.
BTW Im shooting it all the time now and dont really care to change up. It came with a learning curve and I definately had to learn its limits but now that Im 20 gauge educated i can say any bird within 30 yards of me is dead.
