While some like to gun and run , while others like to scout and "pattern " their birds, while yet others tend to hunt edges of fields or their favorite clearcuts, what is your favorite way to go after birds?
Myself , I tend to go out and scout birds but not really patterning them. i just cant seem to find my way into the woods before the sun comes up this time of year just yet. after April 18th that will be a cakewalk. I scout to find what specific areas they are feeding and hanging out in. Luckily for me the birds are generally most places where I live so this makes it much easier.
Once the general area is found I then like to set up just off the field edge . I can see the field easily but cant directly shoot them out in the field. I set up along the woods edge between the field and a clearcut, sort of the best of both worlds.
I like to start with is a slate friction call. i do some soft yelps on the slate, just in case one is close. I then like to get out the box call and do some distance/shock calling. this ussually tells me just how far away they are. once they move closer i like to just purr on the slate . careful slow movement as they get closer until within shooting range.... as with all hunting most of the time the quarry wins, but we all know its not all about that at all.
Of coarse if all else fails i start a slow motion version of the run and gun. I ease ever so slowly along the woods between the field and the cutover, a sort of spot and stalk. last year my first bird last year was taken this way. spotting them in the open before they could see me with a quick setup and ended with a close range shot.not the greatest picture but had to get to work that day.
