... but didn't have a camera. It was a beautiful 150-class ten pointer laying in the back of a pick-up in front of Poole's Store on River Road. I talked to the hunter - he took it on the run - first day of late black-powder (Saturday). And get this - he ain't gonna mount it. Ghads. Pearls before swine I say. It was the buck of a lifetime, and the antlers will probably wind up gather dust in his basement. Breaks my heart.
Maryland does have some dandy deer though.

"It makes me happy to see deer of that caliber here, it makes me sad to see them in someone elses truck." Oh yeah, try watching several walk by in bow range when you're out of buck tags. ;D

Seems like Poole's store keeps coming up in my big buck events as well. I didnt see any 150 class tens this season around Poole's store but I did see a few PY class 10's not to far from there. That area has some super potential for big deer.
Biggest problem I see is hunting pressure, and a basic lack of concern by the local hunters of area burn out. They trapse all through those lands there going for broke everyday they hunt with little concern at all for preserving the hunt quality. Theres enough deer in those parts that even idiots get bow close on a regular basis so there isn't much hope of ever convincing them it could be better.
It was a very classic situation of look at the lay of the land, look at the pressure and go where it isnt. I had to laugh the first morning we were there. SC trkyhntr had to miss the first sun up hunt so we could get his liscense and at 8 am we were riding through the wma heading to the woods. In the wide open fields we saw a couple of 120 class deer standing calmly while the public land guys hunted the park boundries inside the woodlines. The deer were easilly outmatching wits against the convoy of hunters by staying out of the woods on private ground.
A guy with first crack in that area and some sense could kill 150's every year within a mile of Pooles store, in my opinion. I see bucks pushing those decriptions pretty much every year. It's just a matter of getting there first and playing your hand right. For the most part though, I wouldnt count on it. The pressure I saw there this season showed me theres no lack of weekend warriors with a wannabe trophy hunter look on their faces keeping those big bucks alive around Pooles store.
I really like that store, its the only place I have been in Maryland that feels country.

Oh yeah, they got deer. I found the world's largest deer bedding area within a mile of Pooles store on public land. I ain't saying where. Lets just say that the rubs in there were bigger than the one I posted from Ohio, and I've never seen so much deer poop and so many beds. There must have been a hundred beds, and everywhere you walked you actually had to watch where you stepped or you'd be stepping in deer scat. I got diverted to hunting a trail to a buck bed, so I haven't been hunting that spot lately, but just writing about it makes me want to go back for a late season shot with the bow.

Let's see... a one mile radius circle covers 2200 acres. Narrows it down I guess... Hmmmm... maybe it was 1.5 miles. Hard to say exactly...

Rule of thumb on new ground. I usually figure I can extensively foot scout 2 sq miles a day, depending on the terrain and cover. ;D That will usually guarantee an early rise the next morning because I won't last long after that last square mile. ;D

Wow. Two square miles a day? That's alot. You're much faster than I am. 'Course, if you've got topos and overheads and narrow it down to a few spots to begin with, well, that might help.
